Rolfing
Have we wondered whether our body is non-aligned or unable to
move naturally without any nudges or tension? Has it occurred
to ourselves why we are unable to feel the balance when we are
either standing or sitting?
Rolfing,
Structural Integration, is a scientifically validated
technique of soft tissue manipulation and movement education
that was developed by Dr. Ida Rolf, a biochemist, in the
1940's. It is aimed at re-establishing the natural alignment
and structural integration of the human body for
vitality and wellbeing.
The
Benefits of Rolfing
Many neck, back and other physical problems are
actually the symptoms of chronic postural restrictions.
Long periods of one-sided work like sitting at a computer,
driving, or long standing hours at work can stress the
body.
Traumas such as car accidents, falls, surgery and sport
injuries can also lead to stiffness and pain in the muscles and
joints. Rolfing is widely regarded as being one of the best
ways of dealing with such problems. Because the body is better
balanced after Rolfing, it expends less energy against gravity.
This is sometimes experienced as higher level of awareness and
vitality. Chronic discomforts can disappear immediately or soon
after the series is completed.
Although Rolfing is mainly concerned with structural changes,
any change in the physical body will inevitably affect the
whole person. Rolfing clients often report positive changes in
their outlook on life and in their ability to handle
emotionally challenging situations. Rolfing is not intended to
be a substitute for medical treatment. It makes no attempt at
diagnosis and does not prescribe. Its purpose is to bring order
to our structure, and in doing so it enhances the functioning
of the whole person.
How does
Rolfing work?
How Rolfing works can easily be visualized if
you think of how a camping tent is structured. Camping tent is
made up of two metal poles and four ropes. You can think of the
metal poles being the bones in your body and the ropes being
the soft tissue structures.
Can you imagine how the tent would be, if the two poles are
straight but the four ropes have different tension? It would be
imbalance and may fall down! What Rolfing does is balancing the
ropes and put it in better alignment that gravity is not
pulling it down.
"An effective human being is a whole that
is
greater than the sum of
its parts"
Ida P.
Rolf, Ph.D
“..when the body gets working
appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then
spontaneously, the body heals itself.”
Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D
